It includes both thermal coal, used primarily for power generation, and metallurgical (coking) coal, essential for steelmaking. Production spans various coal ranks, from high-energy anthracite and bituminous coal to lower-grade sub-bituminous and lignite. The sector remains a major component of the global energy and industrial mix, particularly in emerging economies. It is highly cyclical and sensitive to electricity demand, steel production, weather patterns, and government policies on emissions. While thermal coal faces structural headwinds in many Western markets, metallurgical and coking coal continues to be a critical input for global steelmaking with a distinct demand profile.
